The Health Services Management program at the IU Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health implemented its first Internship Interview Day on November 1, 2019. The matchmaker approach allowed internship sites to conduct 30-minute interviews with five to six students they selected from a resume book prior to the event. After the event, sites ranked students they would be interested in working with and students ranked sites they would be interested in interning with. Matches were revealed the following week and the internships began spring 2020.
Many students who participated had positive things to say, such as, “It was fun to go through Interview Day as a group. It felt like we were doing this together,” and “It was exciting to have the opportunity to talk with so many healthcare organizations!”
Interviewers from the sites agreed, stating that there were great candidates who were very well prepared and that everything went smoothly and on time. One internship site “loved the format.”
A dozen organizations participated, which included Community Physician Network, CarDon & Associates, Eskenazi Health, The VA Medical Center, Together Homecare, Little Red Door Cancer Agency, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, IN Immunization Coalition, IN 211, Golden Heart Health Services, Center for Health Policy – IUPUI, and Cancer Support Community.
Invitations have been sent to various internship sites for the next HSM Internship Interview Day, scheduled for February 28, 2020. If your organization is interested in participating in the future, this event is held every fall and spring semester. To be considered, please reach out to Sarah Johnson at shm@iu.edu.
