Dr. Kelsey Binion is a research associate for Wellbeing Informed by Science and Evidence in Indiana (WISE Indiana). She received her MA in Applied Communication and PhD in Health Communication from Indiana University Indianapolis. Before pursuing her graduate degrees, she worked as a marketing specialist at ANGI (formerly known as Angie's List). Dr. Binion pursued a doctorate in health communication, because it blended her communication background with her desire to help improve Hoosiers' health and well-being.
As a health communication scholar, Dr. Binion's research centers on how individuals talk about stigmatizing health issues (e.g., mental health, reproductive health) in everyday conversations. Her scholarship reflects an applied approach to research because she is interested in identifying tangible solutions and/or recommendations for the community. For example, Dr. Binion has implemented arts-based research methods to educate and engage community members about reproductive health challenges. She strives to bridge the divide between academia and the public to improve individuals' health outcomes.
Dr. Binion is collaborating with IU's Bowen Center for Health Workforce Research and Policy and Pew Charitable Trusts to complete a series of literature reviews to understand the workforce's diversity, competence, and quality of care related to substance use disorder (SUD), traditional and alternative school-based SUD, and suicide care and prevention. The purpose of these reviews is to identify and put forth recommendations to improve the healthcare workforce and the quality of care.
