Dr. Nir Menachemi serves as the Dean of the Fairbanks School of Public Health. He is the Fairbanks Endowed Chair and holds the rank of professor. He also holds an appointment as scientist with the Regenstrief Institute, an internationally recognized informatics and healthcare research organization that is dedicated to the improvement of health through research that enhances the quality and cost-effectiveness of health care.
Dr. Menachemi’s work focuses at the intersection of health policy, medicine, and business. As a health services researcher, much of his work has focused on cost, quality, and access to care in the U.S. In 2021, for his work during the pandemic, he received the AcademyHealth HSR Impact Award and the was recognized by the Indiana Healthcare Executives Network (iHEN) with the 2021 service excellence award. In 2022, he received the Alumnus of the Year award from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Health Services Administration. And in 2024, he received the Myron D. Fottler Exceptional Service Award from the Academy of Management Health Care Management Division.
Before being appointed dean on June 15, 2024, he served as interim dean, executive associate dean & chief operating officer of the Fairbanks School of Public Health. In addition, he was chair of the Department of Health Policy & Management from 2015-2022.
Prior to joining the faculty at Indiana University Indianapolis, Dr. Menachemi held faculty positions at the UAB School of Public Health and the Florida State University College of Medicine. At UAB, he received the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Graduate School Award for Excellence in Mentorship. In 2011, Dr. Menachemi received the “Professor John D. and Starr A. Blair Award in Health Organization Management Research” presented by the faculty at Texas Tech University Rawls College of Business.
Dr. Menachemi has published more than 300 peer-reviewed scientific papers, and his work has appeared in numerous prestigious professional journals, including Health Affairs, New England Journal of Medicine, Health Services Research, and the American Journal of Public Health.
Dr. Menachemi’s research examines how organizational strategies impact critical performance measures, including quality outcomes and financial performance. In addition, he has published extensively on health policy and public health topics ranging from obesity issues to the impact of various laws or policies on health outcomes. Dr. Menachemi’s work has been funded by such diverse entities as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and private foundations and corporations. In addition, Dr. Menachemi has developed several long-term partnerships with health departments at the state and local level in both Alabama and Florida. Likewise, he has formed similar partnerships with state and local public health entities in Indiana.
