Discover the early history of public health in a city overflowing with captivating examples and learn from world-renowned faculty who are not just knowledgeable, but also passionate about the subject.
In London, you will explore the past and future of public health and the organization, financing, challenges, and future direction of the NHS. A few program highlights include:
- Participate in walking tours led by guides with public health backgrounds who will incorporate their specialized, field-relevant knowledge into the tours. Tours will include discussion about sanitation and early epidemics in Victorian London, as well as a visit to the John Snow pub and the Broad Street pump, site of the infamous cholera outbreak.
- Visit London-area historical sites, museums, and other cultural sites directly related to health and health systems.
- Meet with local health experts, including faculty from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and King’s College London.
- Take part in a fun public health photo hunt in the heart of London.
This study abroad experience is a 3-credit hour spring course entitled, UK: Health Systems Around the World. All participants will be required to enroll in one of the following courses if accepted into the program:
- PBHL-H 450 (Undergraduate)
- PBHL-H 670 (Graduate)

Eligibility
Open to Indiana University students in good academic standing who meet these criteria:
- Must have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA, with priority given to students with a GPA of 3.0 and higher.
- This program is designed for junior or senior undergraduate students who are interested in health and healthcare at an international level, but students of all majors are welcome to apply.
- Although designed for students with a special interest in health-related professions, undergraduate, graduate, and professional students of all majors and IU campuses are welcome to apply.
- Students will be required to attend four mandatory pre-trip sessions.

The program fee covers:
- Lodging
- Some meals
- Some excursions
- Most ground transportation

Additional expenses will include:
- Airfare of approximately $1,300 for roundtrip transportation to London (students will arrange their own flights).
- Spending money for meals, excursions, theater tickets, and other incidentals (recommend $450).
- Study abroad fees of $92 for the international study fee and $33 for insurance.
- Passport fee of approximately $145.
- Tuition and related fees to cover the required three-credit hour course (amount will vary based upon residency status and full/part-time status); visit the IU Indianapolis cost estimator to determine how the three additional credits will impact your spring bursar bill.
Apply for a scholarship now, travel later
IU Indianapolis undergraduate students can apply for a study abroad scholarship and later identify where they want to study. As a degree-seeking undergraduate student within your first year at IU Indianapolis, IU Columbus, or IU Fort Wayne, you may be eligible for the Study Abroad Planning Scholarship of $3,000. Applicants to the scholarships do not need to have already identified a program. This is an opportunity to explore all international options.

There will be a series of pre-travel meetings taking place virtually. Additional information regarding the meeting details will be sent to students accepted into the program.
Housing and meals
Students will be housed in double-occupancy rooms in Bloomsbury, London, allowing for a reasonable commute to our classroom meeting space. The accommodations are safe, clean, and comfortable. No male students will be permitted to share rooms with female students unless they are traveling as a legally married couple. Accommodations will be arranged for students.
