Fairbanks researcher among 14 fellows to be inducted into American College of Medical Informatics

Friday, November 04, 2022

joshua vest

The American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) announced that Joshua Vest, PhD, MPH, of the Indiana University Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health and the Regenstrief Institute will be one of 14 fellows inducted into its ranks on November 6 in Washington, D.C., at ceremonies during the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) 2022 Annual Symposium.

The induction class includes physicians, PhDs and other professionals from two countries, eight states and institutions such as Johns Hopkins, Vanderbilt, University of Washington and Weill Cornell.

Vest is a health services researcher with an interest in the organizational determinants and effectiveness of health information technology and systems. His work with health information exchange has ranged from organizational adoption and strategy to impact on outcomes such as readmission rates, repeat imaging and costs. As a former local public health practitioner, Vest has a particular interest in effective public health information systems.

Vest and his colleagues developed Uppstroms, a social determinants of health algorithm that has been in use at nine clinics associated with Eskenazi Health, a safety net health system in Indianapolis. The algorithm identifies primary care patients with social risks such as behavioral health or struggles with food or housing. This allows clinicians to offer these patients referrals to specialized services such as a dietician, behavioral health or a social worker, with the goal of addressing the need before it turns into a crisis.

AMIA’s Annual Symposium is the premier medical informatics event, presenting leading-edge scientific research and more than 100 scientific sessions. The symposium presents work from across the spectrum of the informatics field – translational bioinformatics, clinical research informatics, clinical informatics, consumer health informatics and public health informatics.

The list of the 2022 ACMI inductees is:

  • Joanna Abraham, PhD; Washington University in St. Louis
  • Suzanne (Sue) Boren, PhD, MHA, FAMIA; University of Missouri
