Dear FSPH community,
The Fairbanks School of Public Health stands with Ukraine following Russia’s recent invasion. This act of war will not only have deep ramifications for our political landscape but will launch a humanitarian crisis that will be compounded by the pandemic.
As a school of public health, we work each day to ensure everyone has the opportunity to live a long and healthy life. This attack will have an enduring effect on the public’s health – overwhelmed hospitals, disruptions in necessary care, a loss of vital and life-saving resources. And this invasion will likely result in further spread of COVID-19.
The challenges facing Ukraine and the world may seem insurmountable, but we are able to stand with Ukraine against this injustice. Our words and actions have power.
Many of you have already spoken out in support of Ukraine. If you are unaware of what is happening, or don’t know where to start to help, we have pulled together some resources to help you.
Learn
If you are unaware of the situation in Ukraine or trying to get a better understanding of what is happening, Vox provides an explainer of the situation, which is a good foundation for the situation. Additionally, this article from CNN will help explain what led to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. NPR is covering key developments each day about the situation in Ukraine.
Act
It is difficult to know what to do in the face of a tragedy like the invasion of Ukraine that is so far removed from our homes here in Indiana and the U.S.
If you feel so moved, many organizations are collecting donations to benefit the people of Ukraine. The Ukrainian Red Cross is providing medical assistance, food and hygiene packs, first aid training, evacuation assistance to those with disabilities and many other life saving services.
One of the most effective ways to do good with limited resources is the same solution that existed before Russia invaded Ukraine: invest in long-running public health challenges that are often ignored or overlooked.
In public health and health administration, we solve problems each day to create opportunities for others. In the face of tragedy, let us lock arms with each other and continue to make the world we live in equitable for everyone.
Respectfully,
Paul K. Halverson, DrPH FACHE
