New survey to provide insight into COVID-19 experience for Hispanics
It is fair to say that all Americans have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. But exactly how the virus has affected particular demographic groups who were already at a disadvantage is only beginning to emerge.
Researchers at Indiana University are working to gain a better understanding of how COVID-19 is affecting one of these groups: Hispanics/Latinos living in Indiana. The goal is to meet the clinical and public health challenges faced by this population group.
“Currently, data available are not detailed enough to characterize perceptions, knowledge and practices regarding COVID-19 among Hispanics,” said Gerardo Maupomé, professor and associate dean of research at the IU Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health.

COVID-19 pandemic strengthens students' commitment to serve
The coronavirus pandemic hasn't just transformed how students take classes or engage in campus life; it's also fundamentally affected how some students regard their chosen fields of study, solidifying a commitment to careers in public health and health care.
In a few short months, students in the health sciences have watched as previously obscure public health agencies and experts have been transformed into household names. They've also seen countless images of heroic health care workers flood the media.
"Before the pandemic, nobody even knew what an epidemiologist was; now everyone thinks they're one," said Thomas Duszynski, director of epidemiology education at the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health at IUPUI. More seriously, he added, "it's really drawn in an intense interest to the field."

IU Health has launched a virtual clinic to offer individuals in Indiana regardless of age free Coronavirus (COVID-19) screenings using the IU Health Virtual Visit app. Staffed 24/7 with IU Health physicians, advance practice providers and registered nurses, the clinic will screen patients from home, potentially eliminating the need to visit physician offices, urgent cares or emergency departments.
