Using machine learning to identify patients’ COVID-19 social risks
Over five million Americans have tested positive for COVID-19, and one thing is certain: individuals of certain race and ethnic groups are being disproportionately affected by the virus. These disparities are likely driven by underlying social risk factors, such as healthcare access or housing conditions, which can impact a person’s health.
FSPH’s Joshua Vest, professor of health policy and management and director of the Center for Health Policy, is working with colleagues at Regenstrief Institute to develop and evaluate technologies that help organizations better understand which patients have social risk factors.
Fairbanks Student Helps Radiology Department Shift Focus to COVID-19
Michelle Martin, a Health Services Management student at the IU Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, is currently working as an office supervisor in the Radiology Department at the IU Health Simon Cancer Center. Since early March when the COVID-19 pandemic ensued, Martin said the radiology department at IU Health has seen many changes.
COVID-19 Testing for Students, Faculty & Staff
IUPUI faculty, staff and students not living on campus but attending in-person classes can be tested for COVID-19 for free August 17-19. This is a saliva-based test and does not involve swabs. To get tested, you'll need to schedule an appointment. You'll receive more information once you make your appointment.
Indiana University Reopening Update
We are excited to welcome students, faculty and staff to the fall semester and share what learning, teaching and research will look like.
- Due to the pandemic, IUPUI has revamped its move-in plans with an efficient process to assist those moving into campus housing.
- The Division of Student Affairs has worked to alter procedures, guidelines and day-to-day operations to ensure students have the support and access they need while upholding best practices to keep everyone healthy and safe.
- Weeks of Welcome is set to kick off the new school year, and despite the pandemic, the two-week slate of events will provide students with plenty of virtual and in-person activities to get the year started.

IU Health has launched a virtual clinic to offer individuals in Indiana regardless of age free Coronavirus (COVID-19) screenings using the IU Health Virtual Visit app. Staffed 24/7 with IU Health physicians, advance practice providers and registered nurses, the clinic will screen patients from home, potentially eliminating the need to visit physician offices, urgent cares or emergency departments.
