IU Indianapolis announces the latest offering in its Campus Read professional development program.
What is a Campus Read?
A Campus Read is a community-wide program in which people read a book together and discuss its meaning to create a common intellectual experience, foster dialogue and connect our campus. Through independent reflection and communal discussion groups, Campus Read participants will develop and enhance skills integral to the success of our students and institution.
How can I participate?
For Spring 2025, we will offer three cohorts of our Campus Read program:
Faculty and lecturer track read of Inclusive Teaching: Strategies for Promoting Equity in the College Classroom by Viji Sathy and Kelly Hogan. Presented in partnership with the Center for Teaching and Learning, Inclusive Teaching offers practical, evidence-based strategies for creating equitable learning environments that support the success of all students. BONUS: We will kick off this Campus Read with a special author workshop on Jan. 28. Register for Inclusive Teaching.
General faculty and staff track read of Do The Work! An Antiracist Activity Book by W. Kamau Bell and Kate Schatz. Packed with activities, games, illustrations, comics, and eye-opening conversation, Do the Work! challenges readers to think critically and act effectively. Register for Do The Work!.
Fiction for building empathy track read of The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett. Born in rural Louisiana, The Vanishing Half chronicles the lives of light-skinned identical twin sisters, Desiree and Stella Vignes, one of whom chooses to pass for white while the other does not. Register for The Vanishing Half.
Each book has a separate signup form. Click the link in the book title to sign up. Please only sign up for one program.
How do Campus Read programs work?
Our expectations for participants in the Campus Read professional development program include reading the book before the discussion meetings and attending the discussion meetings. That's it. Committing to those two components is crucial to your reading group's success.
For the accompanying discussion groups, we have multiple rotations and meeting times for each book. We are offering a variety of options to maximize participation. See each registration for exact meeting dates and times.
Groups are led by volunteer faculty and staff facilitators. All meetings run for one hour and will be remote via Zoom.
Each group will meet beginning the week of Feb. 3. If you find yourself signing up very near to your first meeting time, it's okay -- there is still time to catch up.
We provide free copies of the book, which will be distributed via mail or will be available for pick up in our office. Additional details are in the signup forms.
Our programs are open to all faculty and staff of any race -- people of color and white people are both encouraged to participate. The program is also open to all IU campuses, and anyone designated as faculty, instructor, staff, or IU affiliate is welcome to participate.
The Campus Read program is made possible through the leadership of the Office of the Dean in the School of Science in partnership with Division of Undergraduate Education, Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, STEM Education Innovation and Research Institute (SEIRI), and the Center for Teaching and Learning.
